Updated Form I-485 Allows Applicants to Request a New or Replacement Social Security Card U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Social Security Administration are allowing most eligible applicants who are filing for adjustment of status to lawful permanent resident to apply for a new Social Security number or replacement card using a single form—the updated Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status.

To lawfully work in the United States, employees must show evidence of their identity and employment eligibility. An unrestricted Social Security card from the Social Security Administration is an acceptable document that shows employment eligibility. Previously, applicants who were granted lawful permanent resident status needed to submit additional paperwork in person at their local Social Security office to obtain a new or replacement Social Security card that is unrestricted.
